SURGICAL (open) HAEMORRHOIDECTOMY

Indicated for patients with third and fourth degree haemorrhoids, surgical haemorrhoidectomy is performed under general anaesthetic and requires a hospital stay of at least four to five days. Under general anaesthetic each of two or three areas of haemorrhoid is cut away. This procedure usually provides permanent relief. However, it leads to a considerable amount of post-operative pain and it will be some weeks before the patient feels able to resume normal activities.

As a result, this procedure is reserved only for the most severe cases.
